The Betio Game Fishing Club was formed to promote recreational fishing in Kiribati and to provide a competitive avenue for members to fish.
THE COMMITTEE
The Club will be managed by a committee of five, consisting of:
Commodore Secretary Treasurer Weigh Master Flag Master
The committee shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting. Committee positions will be subject to requirements by members which will also be decided at the Annual General Meeting. A quorum is two committee members and three ordinary members.
MEETINGS
The committee can call a meeting should they consider it necessary. Meetings can be called provided at least 5 members wish to do so.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership requires the approval of the committee and payment of an annual membership fee. Membership consists of:
Single $ 30.00 Family $ 50.00 (husband, wife, and children up until their 18th birthday)
Membership Fees will be set at the Annual General Meeting each year.
TOURNAMENT RULES
1. No fish under 5 lbs will be accepted for the board.
2a. Any boat captain or crew who having registered for a fishing competition, in the opinion of the club committee use any method of fishing other than trolling shall be liable to immediate expulsion from the club, and such expulsion shall be for life. Trolling may be performed either by game rod or hand held line.
b. Any boat captain or crew who in the opinion of the committee attempt at any time to weigh in fish for the record board which has not been caught by trolling shall be dealt with as in 2a.
3. Damaged fish will be weighed in providing they are whole fish.
4. Fish weighed in by members must be caught on boats registered with the club. Fish caught by members who are commercial fishermen shall not be weighed in if caught whilst they are engaged in commercial fishing.
5. All boats participating in a tournament may not leave its home port before midnight on the day of the tournament unless otherwise specified by the committee.
6. No non-members are permitted on board any boat participating in a tournament otherwise automatic disqualification will result.
7. Registrations for tournaments can be made at any time by the boat captains with any member of the committee or another boat crew until 2400 hours on the eve of the tournament. The tournament registration fee is $ 20.00. This fee is set at the Annual General Meeting each year.
8. At time of registration boat captains must advise their intended destination and number of people on board.
9. Once a boat has registered for a tournament it must deregister whether it went out or not and whether it caught fish or not. Failure to deregister may result in an unnecessary search.
10. Weigh-in shall commence at 1700 hours on the day of the tournament unless otherwise specified by the committee.
11. When determining fish weight the first weight called by the Weigh Master when the fish is on the scales will be the weight recorded on the scoresheet.
12. No late weigh-in will be accepted UNLESS: a. A boat is working a large fish. Other boats should be advised by radio and confirm the situation if possible.
b. A tournament boat is involved in a rescue situation.
c. Mechanical breakdown which is verified by another boat.
d. Unforseen circumstances – Weigh Masters discretion.
13. In the event the committee is unable to be present to officiate at a weigh-in boat captains will represent the committee.
14. All boat owners joining the club shall submit to the committee details of their boat on a form obtainable from the club secretary and obtain a copy of the club rules at the same time.
15. Boat points for tournaments are allocated as listed below: -

To qualify for points you must weigh in the heaviest of each of the targeted species equalling or exceeding the minimum weight

Mahi Mahi Takua Rainbow Runner Kamaa 16. One fish, other than the recognised game fish, can be fished for. Should the heaviest of these exceed the weight of the fish currently displayed on the club record board under “Other”, then that fish will be added to the board and replace the revious record. Fish caught under the category of “Other” are not tournament fish but may be recognised at the annual prize giving function.
17. All record fish weighed in must be confirmed by a reliable witness.
18. Any changes to rules to suit a particular tournament shall be advised to boat captains at time of registration.
WIPING OF THE BOARD
The wiping of the board shall be performed on January 1 each year, usually at 1 pm unless the committee advises otherwise.
FISHING CALENDAR
The newly elected committee appointed at the Annual General Meeting will prepare a Tournament Fishing Calendar basis a period of 12 months.
AWARDS FUNCTION
The incumbent committee shall be responsible for arranging the awards function and presentation of prizes relevant to the year it is in office.
